Question

You can no longer assume the population is at Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Question 18: For goldfish, solid orange coloring is dominant while orange with black spots is recessive. A total of 2500 goldfish were stocked in an outdoor pond; 2275 solid orange and 225 orange with black spots. Since the fish came from a protected, indoor, stable environment, you may assume the stocked population was in equilibrium. What are the allele frequencies in the original stocked population? List the information given: List the term(s) to find Question 19: Ten years later the pond was drained and 2000 fish were recovered: 1280 solid orange and 720 orange with black spots. You can assume that the population has settled into a new equilibrium. What are the allele and genotype frequencies in the recovered population? List the information given: List the term(s) to find

Explanation / Answer

a) Total number of induviduals counted is 2500

Recessive induviduals are orange with blackspots 225 (q2)=225/2500=0.09, Therefore is 0.3

Since p+q=1, then p=1-0.3=0.7

Therefore the allele frequencies, p=0.7 and q= 0.3

b)

Total number of induviduals counted is 2000

Recessive induviduals are orange with blackspots 720 (q2)=720/2000=0.36, Therefore is 0.6

Since p+q=1, then p=1-0.6=0.4

Therefore the allele frequencies, p=0.4 and q= 0.6

Genotype frequencies

p2= 0.16

2pq=0.48

q2=0.36
