Question
You are working on a project to reconstruct a pyramid using very simple tools. In order to get blocks of stone, of mass M1, up to the top of the pyramid, you want to use a ramp and a second mass, M2, attached to the first with a rope over a pulley as shown. The ramp has an angle of 11 degrees, and the block you wish to move up the ramp has a mass of M1 = 230 kg. What is the mass of the lifting block, M2, such that the acceleration of M1 is 0.2 m/s2? Give your answer in kg and to three significant figures. Again, in this case, assume we can ignore friction.

Explanation / Answer
M1 will have the equation T - M1 g sin theta = M1 a M2 will have the equation M2 g - T = M2a add these two equations M2 g - M1 g sin theta = (M1 + M2) a M2 *9.81 - 230*9.81*sin(11) = (230+ M2) *0.2 solve for M2 M2=49.59 kg
