WC 402 - Capsule Evaluation
WC 402 (Ampicillin 250 mg) is an antiobiotic used in the treatments of bacterial infection, respiratory tract infection, urinary tract infection and so on. 75 medicine samples of WC 402 were collected by a collaborator in Leogane.
For every drug produced, it is mandatory to undergo quality check before it is released to market. In somecases, it is checked after release to the market by the authorities to ensure public health.
First step in evaluation process is to check the weight and uniformity of the drug product in different samples. Each capsule is opened up to tip out the powder, weighed and recorded. This gives the data about amount of drug powder present in each of 75 capsules, which should be within the limit of 90-110% of the average weight. Whereas, the data shows there is considerable variation in the amount of drug powder present in each capsule, which exceeds or under the limit. From this data it can be inferred that the mass of drug distributed into the capsules are not uniform.
Further analysis can be done by assessing the drug content uniformity in the sample from each capsule followed by HPLC(High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) to analyse the accuracy of drug content.
