Question

Thank you! they don't get infected even though they are exposed to it many times! It tums out this is because of variation in the gene CCRS knowledge to a more realistic case. Rarely, people seem to be immune to HIV- t. Now, let's apply your CCR5 has two major alleles: let's call them C and C2. C2 has a 32 base-pair deletion in the middle of the gene. People who are homozygous for C2 have two defective copies of this gene, so they cannot bind HITV very well.. which actually turns out to be a good thing. C2C2 homozygotes are resistant to HIV infection. Sasan is a 17-year old European she has multiple sex partners. She heard about CCR5 and that it is most common among Europeans On the Internet she found out about a study of 1318 random European Americans of child-bearing age in the United States, of which 1102 were found to be CC1 (Glass et al., 2006). Assume that the U.S. European American population is at HWeq at this gene. American woman who is at increased risk of HIV infection because (a) What is the genotype frequency of CC1 individuals? 1318 (b) What is the allele frequency of the C2 allele? (Hint: this will take a few steps of math. Show your math.) C. (c) What is the genotype frequency of C2C2 individuals? (d) If you were Susan, would you be worried? (Hint: how likely is it that she is c?)

Explanation / Answer

a) Genotype frequency of C1C1 individual is 1102/1318=0.83

b) As according to Hardy weinberg equation p+q=1

now if p2 =0.83, p=0.91

thus q=(1-0.91)=0.09

or allele frequency is 0.09.

c) frequency of C2C2 individual is = q2 or (0.09)2 =0.008

d) possibility of C2C2 individual in the population is thus 1318 X q2 or 1318 X0.0081= 10 individual

possibility of having C1C2 individual is 2pq ( Hardy Weinberg equation: p2+ 2pq+q2=1)

= 2X 0.91 X 0.09=0.16

or 1318 X 0.16 = 210 ( approximately)

Thus there is a possiblity that Susan can be either C2C2 or C1C2 , and if she is C1C2 there could be chances of having HIV.
