Question
A negatively charged particle of mass m = 7.0E-26kg, charge q = -3.2E-19m and moving with speed v = 2.0E3m/s passes undeflected through a velocity selector where the magnitude of the electric field is 4.0E2 N/C. It then enters into a uniform magnetic field with B2=0.50T with v perpendicular to B2 and follows the path shown.
a) What must be the direction and magnitude of B1 in the velocity selector, in order that the particle passes through undeflected? Indicate the direction of B1 on the diagram above.
b) What is the direction of B2? Show it on the diagram.
c) Calculate the diameter, d, of the path followed by the particle.
Explanation / Answer
a. the force due to electric field = upwards so, force due to B should be doenwards . so , direction of B = inside the plane of paper. b. for the charge to turn as shown , the B2 must be outside the plane of the paper. c. r= mv/qB d= 2r d= 1.75 X 10^-3 meters
