Question
A narrow beam of light passes through a plate of glass with thickness 2.72 cm and a refractive index 1.46. The beam enters from air at an angle 21.6degree. The goal is to calculate the deviation d of the ray as indicated in the figure. Following the light ray in the direction indicated by the arrows, compute the refracted angle theta2. Answer in units of degree Compute the refracted angle theta3 from the glass to air as the ray exits the glass. Answer in units of degree Find deviation d. Answer in units of cmExplanation / Answer
a)
1 sin 21.6 = 1.46 sin r
So r = 14.604 degree
Now i2 = r
So, 1.46 sin 14.604 = 1 sin r2
So, r2 = 21.6 degree
So, deviation = 2 = 14.604 + 21 .6 = 36.204 degree
b) lateral shift = t sin (i-r) / cos r = 0.342 cm
