Question
A man in a canoe need to travel 600 m on the Bay of Fundy from his favourite fishing spot to his cabin. This trip takes 4 minutes when the tidal motion is negligible. However on this day the man is facing a strong tidal current that runs toward him at a 30 degree angle to the left of the line between his fishing spot and the cabin. The tidal current flows at 1.5 m/s. (10 marks) a. If the man wishes to travel directly across the lake to the cabin in what direction does he need to canoe? b. How long does the trip take?Explanation / Answer
his speed is 600/240 = 2.5 m/s so we want x direction to cancel -1.5*sin(30)+2.5*sin(theta) = 0 theta = arcsin( 1.5*sin(30)/2.5)=17.46 degrees his effective speed = 2.5*cos(17.46) -1.5*cos(30)=1.086 m/s t = d/v = 600/1.086=552.5 s = 9.2 minutes
