As shown, an L-shaped bar is supported by a pin at joint A. The bar's dimensions are a = 610mm and b = 360mm , and the bar is subjected to a force with magnitude F = 5.10kN at joint B. Ignoring the bar's weight, find the actual orientation of the applied force. What is the value of the angle ??

Explanation / Answer

It must not produce a moment about the pivot point or it would rotate. Therefore its direction must be an extension of line A-B.

tan(theta) = b/a = 360/610

theta = 30.545 degrees
