Question
Review the section "Investigating Life: Hot Plants Offer Heat Reward." The image below shows a normally functioning mitochondrial electron transport chain. The alternative oxidase pathway mentioned in the Investigating Life section diverts electrons away from the trapsport chain before they reach the third and fourth membrane proteins. What are the consequencés of diverting these electrons from the transport chain? (Select all that apply) Electron transport chain dail NAD+ + H.FAD, FAD + 2H. ½Otant 2 3 3 Ht H+ 3 Check All That Apply 18 of 2o Next>Explanation / Answer
Answer: B and E
B) ATP synthase generates fewer ATP per unit time
C) More energy is lost as heat
Explanation: When the normal electron transport chain and oxidative phosphorylation are diverted, lesser electrochemical gradient will be formed as there will be lesser conc. gradient between matrix and intermembrane space. Lesser number of electrons will fall back through the ATPase synthase complex and hence fewer ATP will be produced and instead more heat will be dissipated heat. The electron are diverted from the transport chain, lesser energy will be used to pump from matrix to intermembrane space hence this space will be lesser acidic.
