Question

Which statement describes a possible outcome for a neurotransmitter after release into the synaptic cleft? (Select the best answer)

A. Modulation by an enzyme, increasing its efficiency
B. Activation of G-protein-coupled receptor on postsynaptic cell
C. Uptake into postsynaptic cell via endocytosis
D. Reuptake into postsynaptic terminal via transporter proteins

Should the answer be B.? Though it seems like D. could also be right?

When a GABAA ionotropic receptor is stimulated by GABA in a developing neuron, which ions flow through its channel, and what effect does this have on the postsynaptic cell? (Select the best answer)

A. Cl–, which hyperpolarizes the postsynaptic cell
B. K+, which hyperpolarizes the postsynaptic cell
C. Cl–, which depolarizes the postsynaptic cell
D. Na+, which depolarizes the postsynaptic cell

Should the answer be C. since GABA in developing neurons is excitatory? If not, please explain what the correct answer is.

Explanation / Answer

Possible outcome for a neurotransmitter after release into synaptic cleft is reuptake into postsynaptic terminal via transport proteins. Action potential which is generated when membrane potential of particular axon rapidly rises and falls, causes the terminal buttons to release small amounts of neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters enters the synaptic cleft. Soon the terminal buttons takes back the neurotransmitters.

When GABAA ionotropic receptor is stimulated by GABA in a developing neuron, Cl- ions flow through its channel. And the effect that it has on the postsynaptic cell depends on the relationship of EGABA relative to the membrane potential of the cell when receptor is gated by GABA. When membrane potential is depolarized opening the intrinsic channel of the GABA will hyoerpolarize the membrane. While when membrane potential is hyoerpolarized opening the intrinsic channel of GABA will depolarize the membrane.
