A 4.73-in. outside diameter polyethylene pipe designed to carry chemical wastes is placed in a trench and bent around a quarter-circular 90 degree bend (see figure) The bent section of the pipe is 52 ft long. Determine the maximum compressive strain emax in the pipe. If the normal strain cannot exceed 6.1 x 10 vs hat is the maximum diameter of the pipe? If d = 4.75 in., what is the minimum acceptable length of the bent section of the pipe?

Explanation / Answer

(a) = L/(/2) =(52*12 in.)/(/2)= 397.251 in.

= (d/2)/ = (4.75/2)/397.251= 0.00598

(b) a = 6.1x10-3   Then from = (d/2)/ we have

dmax = 2a = 2(397.251)(6.1 x 10-3) = 4.846 in.

(c) d = 4.75 in. From = (d/2)/ = (d/2)/[L/(/2)] = d/(4L), we have

Lmin = d/(4a) = *4.75/(4*6.1x10-3) = 611.581 in. = 50.97 ft
