Question
You have two capacitors, one is 4.0 uF the other is 7.5 uF. You also have some wires and a 9.0 V battery.a. Draw a diagram of a circuit using the same battery and capacitors with the capacitors connected in parallel. Find the equivalent capacitance for each circuit.
b. For each of the two circuits drawn in part (a) determine the charges on each capacitor.
c. For each of the circuits from part (a) determine the total energy stored by the capacitors. Which configuration stores the greater amount of energy? Which configuration stores the greater amount of charge?
Explanation / Answer
a) equivalent capacitance
Ceq = c1+ c2 = 4 + 7.5 = 11.5 uf
b) charge on each capacitor
Q1 = c1 V = 4 * 9 V = 36 u colmbs
Q1 = c2 V = 7.5 * 9 V =67.5 u colmbs
c) Energy = 1/2 C v^2
for c1 = 0.5 * 4*9^2 = 162 u joules
for c1 = 0.5 * 7.5 *9^2 = 303.75 u joules
total energy = 1/c V^2 ( C1+C2) = 465.76 u Joules.
