Question

I did part A, need help with Part B

Unless otherwise stated, all objects are located near the Earth's surface, where g = 9.80 m/s^2 . Jane and John, with masses of 55 kg and 70 kg, respectively, stand on a frictionless surface 14 m apart. John pulls on a rope that connects him to Jane, giving Jane an acceleration of 0.96 m/s^2 toward him.

Part A)What is the magnitude of the John's acceleration?

a =0.75 m/s^2

Part B) If the pulling force is applied constantly, where will Jane and John meet?

x= ? meters from John’s original position

Explanation / Answer

Let accleration of john = -a1 ( towards left)

and acceleration of jane = +a2 ( towards right )

Then acceleration of john with respect to jane = - a1 -a2 ( towards left ) = -1.71

total displacement of john w . r.t jane = 14 m

initally both are at rest .

Time taken to travel this 14 m

14 = 0.5 (1.71) t*t

=> t = 4.05s
