Question
I cannot seem to figure this question out. I have tried every way...ways of making the whole thing into a rectangle and trying it that way. Here is the problem. Please help, I only have a few tries left:A pilot in a small plane encounters shifting winds. He flies 26.0 northeast, then 45.0 due north. From this point, he flies an additional distance in an unknown direction, only to find himself at a small airstrip that his map shows to be 70.0 directly north of his starting point.
What is the missing Leg lenght and what is the direction north of west?
Explanation / Answer
northeast is 45 deg. So he went 26km*sin45 north and 26km*cos45 east. Then he went 45 km north. We are 26kmsin45 too far east and (70- 45 - 26cos45) km = 6.615 km south of where we want to be. INVTAN( 6.615/18.38477) = 19.8 deg north of west. 19.8 deg north of west was the direction of the third leg of his trip.
