Question

The light ray shown in the gure makes an angle of 11.0° with the normal line at the boundary of linseed oil and water.                                                                                                                                                 a) Find the angle 1. Note that n = 1.48 for the linseed oil.
Answer in units of °.                                                                                                                                  b) Find the angle 2. Answer in units of °.

Explanation / Answer

We have,
the angle of refraction of light at the 1st boundary is the same measure as the angle of incidence at the second boundary.
By using Snell's law:

Part - 1
(1) Sine 1 = (1.48) Sin (11.1)
sin1 = 0.28493

Angle 1 = 16.555 degrees

Part - 2

Use Snell's law again
(1.48) Sin 11.1 = (nwater) Sin2

0.2849325 = 1.333 sin2

We have angle 2 = 12.3424 degrees
