Question

A patient is referred to your laboratory because she and some of her children were bom with a cleft palate. What would you conclude about the genotype of this disorder from this hereditary pattern in her family's pedigree? (1 point) Suggest a likely genotype for as many of the individuals as possible. (2 points) For example, can you suggest the likely genotype of I-1 and I-2? Suggest a likely genotype for each of the children, II-1, II-2, 11-3, 11-4 and I1-5 (Invent the allele name, but be sure to defino it for the instructor)

Explanation / Answer

The pedigree chart given in the diagram shows about the Autosomal Dominant inheritance. As, the female parent is affected which further passes down to one son and one daughter of their family. Let, the genotype of the parents be Dd for the father and dd for the mother. The progenies in the F1 will have dd, dd, Dd, Dd, i.e. 50% chance of ofhaving a child that inherits both copies of working gene (unaffected child) and 50% chance that the child will inherit the dominant genemutation and the working copy of gene ( affected child). In the pedigree chart it is quite clear that 2 out of 5 children are affected with the disorder.
