Question
Two questions! Here I have 2 different diagrams, I have to draw arrows from each "X" based on the charges surrounding. In green I drew what I thought was right (yes? no?). On #1 I figured B was a zero charge because the charges are "cancelling" each other out.
For #2, there is also an additional question of which electric field is stronger... A or B? B is the same distance away as the length of the square. No calculations should be done. Help! There's very little on the book in this... it just jumps straight into equations.
Explanation / Answer
your diagram is drawn correctly. #2 has a stronger electric field. note that electric field is using vector for addition. due to the charge at the top right, since it is positive, the charge at B will be pointing in the direction of positive x and negative y. due to the charge at the bottom right, since it is positive, the charge at B will be pointing in the direction of positive x and positive y. notice here, you will see that one charge is x + y. the other is x - y. therefore, the y componenent of the electric field is cancelled by each other and the x component of the electric field is multiple by twice.
