Question
A bungee jumper with mass 60.0kg jumps from a high bridge. after reaching his lowest point, he oscillates up and down, hitting a low point eight more times in 42.0s. He finally comes to a rest 30.0, below the level of the bridge.
a) estimate the spring stiffness constant of the bungee cord assuming simple harmonic motion (answer units: N/m)
b) estimate the unstretched length of the bungee cord assuming SHM (answer units: m)
I submited this question before, and got 19.6m and 60 m for the answers, but they are wrong) PLEASE HELP
Explanation / Answer
it is a case of damped osillator
8 oscillations in 42 seconds
frequency f = 8/42 = 0.19
f = (1/2) (k/m)
where k = spring constant
mass m = 60.0 kg
k = 42 mf2
= 4(3.14)2 (60)(0.19)2
= 85.42 N/m
k (L) = mg
(85.42)(L) = 60(9.8)
L = 6.88 m
unstretched length = 30 + 6.88 = 36.88 m
