I'm making a presentation on the article found below. I need to figure out where the equations come from and show some steps on how to get to each. I've looked everywhere and found things that look similar but I still don't understand where they got the first equation.

Can anyone give me a place to start? A reference? Would even be helpful if you could show me how they derived the first equation. I need to know how to go from 1 to 2, 2 to 3, so on and so forth.
