Question

A student tosses a ball into the air while trying to study. The student is able to give the ball an initial speed of 12.0 m/s. Determine the following:

a. the maximum height the ball can go;
b. the acceleration of the ball at the top (maximum height);
c. the velocity of the ball when it returns to the person’s hand (assuming it doesn’t change height after the toss);
d. how much time it takes for the ball to return to the person’s hand after the initial toss;
e. how fast the ball was traveling when it was halfway between the top and the person’s hand.

Explanation / Answer

initial speed u = 12m/s
a) v2 - u2 = 2as

when it reaches the hghest point , its velocity will be zero.

0 - 122 = 2(-g)h

h = 7.34 m ...ANS

b) accelelartion is always uniform and same and is g = 9.81 m/s2 .

c) v2 - u2 = 2as

v2 - 0 = 2(g)(7.34)

v = 12 m/s ( it will be same as hight and acceleration are same)

D) v = u +at

0 = 12 - gt

t = 1.223 sec .

it will take same to return to the student as it take to go up there as hight and acceleration are same.

T = 2 X 1.223 = 2.45 s

e) v2 - u2 = 2as

v2 - 0 = 2(g)(7.34/2)

v = 8.5 m/s
