Question

An average person resting will have approximately 11 x 109 open capillaries. The average blood flow velocity in a resting person's capillary is 3 x 10 - 4ms - 1, with an average length or 1.0 mm and a diameter of 6 mum. If the aorta of a particular person has a 1.1cm radius which is 0.1cm smaller than the average person's aorta, calculate what the blood flow needs to be in this person's aorta to support the capillary Mood flow rate. Compare the answer in (part a) to the answer you would get for an average person and determine which heart will have to work harder to maintain the same capillary blood flow rate.

Explanation / Answer

The amount of blood reaching the cells should be same
which imples that the volume flow rate should be constant
volume flow rate = crossectional area x flow velocity
total volume of blood flown out of heart = total blood passing into capilaries
so volume flow rate of aorta = n*volume flow rate of capillaries
==>volume flow rate of aorta=11x109*3x10-1**r2 =0.093305 m^3/sec

a)blood flow rrate of aorta =volume flow rate /area of aorta=245.4537 m/sec

if the area of aorta decreases blood flow rate increases meaning the heart has to pump faster sothe heart has to work harder to pump the same blood
