Question
A man with a mass of 69 kg skis down a frictionless hill that is h = 3.9 m high. At the bottom of the hill the terrain levels out. As the man reaches the horizontal section, he grabs a 20-kg backpack and skis off a 2.0-m-high ledge.
Please show WORK!!!!! and formulas you used!!!!
1. What is the speed of the skier just before grabbing the back pack?
2. What is the speed of the skier just after grabbing 20-kg back pack?
3. At what horizontal distance from the edge of the ledge does the skier land?
(Assume there is no air resistance)
Explanation / Answer
a) using then coservation of energy
mgh = 0.5mv^2
9.8( 3.9) = 0.5(v)^2
solving for v = 8.74 m/s apprx ( before grabbing the grab pack)
b) velocity after grabbing grab pack
inelastic ciolliosn,
69(8.74) + 0 = V( 20 +69)
V = 6.78 m/s apprx
c) covering a vertical height of 2 m , time will be: t = sqroot(2h/g) = sqroot(4/9.8)= 0.64 sec apprx
horizontal distanmce= 6.78 x 0.64= 4.3392 m apprx
