Question
A helium-neon laser illuminates a diffraction grating. The distancebetween the two bright fringes is 32 cm on ascreen 2.0 mbehind the grating. What is the spacingbetween slits of the grating?The equation I am using is change in y = (wavelength x distance of screen grating) / (space between slits of grating)
So, 633 *10^-9 x 2 / .32 = 3.95 *10^-6m
then i thought one mu meter is equal to 1*10^-6 meters... so I multiplied 3.95 *10-6 x 1*10^-6 = 3.95 *10^-12 mu meters but its not the right answer...
Explanation / Answer
Given:
distance between bright fringes is y=0.32 m
distance between screen and slit is L= 2 m
wavelength of the light used is =633*10-9 m
if d is the width of the slit then
d=L/y
=(633*10-9 m)(2m)/(0.32m)
=3.95*10-6 m(1m/10-6 m)
=3.95 m
