Question
A narrow U-shaped glass tube with open ends is filled with 25.0 of oil (of specific gravity 0.800) and 25.0 of water on opposite sides, with a barrier separating the liquids. (See the figure .)
part A)Assume that the two liquids do not mix, and find the final height of the columns of liquid in each side of the tube after the barrier is removed.Give the heights for the left and the right arms of the glass respectively, separated with a comma.
partB)For the following cases, arrive at your answer by simple physical reasoning, not by calculations:
What would be the height on each side if the oil and water had equal densities?
Give the heights for the left and the right arms of the glass respectively, separated with a comma
part C)What would the heights be if the oil's density were much less than that of water?
Give the heights for the left and the right arms of the glass respectively, separated with a comma.
Explanation / Answer
when barrier is removed
pressure on both sides should be equal
25 is their initial height
if height of water decreases by h height of oil increases by h
density of water x height of water = density of oil x height of oil
1000 x (25-h) = 800 x (25+h)
h=2.777
so height of water = 25-h = 22.22
height of oil = 25 +h = 27.777
left and right : 22.22,27.77 ( or) 27.77,22,22 you didnt mention which is in which part of U-shaped glass.Try both the answers
if oil density is very less then it height in the right column would increasse much more.
