Question

9. (A) List the three conditions that are necessary and sufficient for evolution by natural selection to proceed. (3 points) wer expectation of aria e phenotype. 2. Inheritance of the variable traits rential mean (B) You are studying a population of plants that are all the recent clonal descendants of a single asexually reproducing 'mother plant. Assume that there is no ongoing mutation, but that the plants are living in a variable environment. Which of the three conditions that are necessary and sufficient for evolution by natural selection will be satisfied, and which will not be satisfied? Explain your answer briefly. (6 points) wer Condition 1 (phenotypic varia environmental effects, since genetic variation within this population will be absent Condition 2 (inheritance) will NOT be satisfied, because there is no genetic variation present Condition 3 (differential fitness) will also NOT be satisfied (in fact, there is only one ge e var ue

Explanation / Answer

As per my opinion, I think you are correct. Fitness is a measurement of reproductive success, in spite of having the same genetic constitution the fitness will depend on the varying environment in which it is grown. The temperature, climatic conditions, nutrition availability will bring about differential expression of the genome in it and thus contribute to different fitness.
