Hi All - this week you will be learning about chromosomes. I would like you to please write a paragraph about a topic related to what we are learning in class (please include your reputable source (0.5 pt) to earn full credit). Please include WHY (1 pt) you chose your topic to earn full credit - this way, duplicate topics will be allowed. Here are the links to some great websites and some specific topics:

Explanation / Answer
Hi,
1. Down syndrome
The down syndrome is one of the most common genetic birth defects. Nearly 1 in 750 live briths have this disorder. The genetics behind this was first uncovered in 1950s. This disease is caused by a chromosomal anamoly called Trisomy 21. The normal cell division results in equal division of chromosomes (23 each) to each cell. But due to disjunction , one of the chromosome pair does not separate. In this case, the chromosome 21 does not separate, resulting in an egg or spern with 2 copies of chromosome 21. The zygot or wmbryo formed will have all chromosome + exxtra copy of 21. Thi condition causes mental retardness, stunted growth, reduced sexual characters., set of facial features..etc.
This topic was chosen becaus Down's syndrome is one of the most common occurance.

2. Telomeres
Telomeres are the ends of the linear chromosomes. The telomeres play crucialrole in maintaining the integrity of ends of the chromosome, take part in aging process...etc. telomeres are replicated using special enzymes called temolerase. The telomers have several tandom GC rich regions( CCCCAA/TTGGGG) which provide stability to the ends. The unusual complex of DNA and protein is a dynamic structure that depends on telomeres. THe telomeres are found to be involved in aging and cancer.
THis topic was chosen because it is one thrust areas in cancer research.
