Explanation / Answer

Glycolysis begins when one glucose molecule breakdown into 2 molecules of puruvate. The pyruvate then gets converted into acetyl coenzyme A in matrix to be transported to inner mitochondrial membrane for citric acid cycle. This acetyl coenzyme then combines with oxaloacetic acid to form citric acid, and then the cycle continues. The intermediates such as NADH and FADH2 form in citric acid cycle enters into electron transport chain (ETC), where final electron acceptor is oxygen, which forms water. The movement of electron drives the movement of proton across the matrix. This generated a proton gradient which helps in ATP synthesis (oxidative phopshorylation) via ATP synthase complex.
