Question
"A cast iron part has to be manufactured by sand casting. Optimize the microstructure to achieve a certain graphite distribution." You have an open-ended topic. Please try to follow these steps to construct a fishbone diagram. Recognition of & statement of problem (Which final microstructure is desired? Do you have enough background information?) Choice of factors, levels, and ranges (Choose controllable factors first, then choose) Selection of the response variable(s) (What is the measure for your experiment?) Choice of design (What is your casting setup? Is there any heat treatment or quenching? How does your setup affect the experiments? Go back to the step 2 for choosing uncontrollable, held-constant, and blocking factors or altering controllable factors.) Please give sufficient information about your fictional-casting unit to let me realize your factors clearly. (1 or 2 paragraphs maybe with some illustrations.)Explanation / Answer
Cast iron (grey cast iron) have good castability.
Chemical composition of cast iron must be selected to satisfy three basic requirements i.e. shape and distribution of graphite .
Factors: fatigue strengths , crack growth , machinability , tensile strength etc.
Response variables : notches , various cast iron parts , internal parts, defects ( such as blow down) etc.
Choice of design: heat treatment will be chosen for optimizing the graphite distribution to increase fatigue and tensile strength .
For drawing fishbone diagram , draw a line heading to optimized microstructure .( west to east)
Then draw lines in both directions ( north and south) , indicating various variables and factors to achieve that microstructure . You can choose from above mentioned points .
