Question
On a movie production lot, boxes of supplies are transported between two stations by a cable lift. While carrying a box weighing 29 lb, the lift stops, as shown in the figure below. Find the tension in the left part of the cable (between Station A and the box), and find the tension in the right part of the cable (between Station B and the box). Carry your intermediate computations to at least 4 decimal places. Round your final answers to the nearest tenth. Tension in left part of cable: lb Tension in right part of cable: lbExplanation / Answer
Suppose tension in left cable is T1 and in right cable is T2.
then IN horizontal,
Fnet = T2 cos24 - T1 cos18 = 0
T2 = 1.04106 T1 .......(i)
In vertical,
Fnet = T1sin18 + T2 sin24 - 29 = 0
Tsin18 + (1.0416 T1) sin24 = 29
T1 = 39.5929 lb Or 40 lb ........Ans(Tension in left string)
puttingin (i)
T2 = 41.2186 lb Or 41 lb .....AnsTension in rigt string
