Question

A student launches a small rocket which starts from rest rest and from ground lavel (a height of h=0). At a height of h=1.7 km the rocket has reached a velocity of v_f= 209 m/s. At that height the rocket runs out of fuel and therefore there is no longer any thrust propelling the rocket. You may assume that the positive direction is upwards in this problem. What was the rocket's acceleration a_1(in m/s^2), during this period from when it is lanched to the pint the it runu out of fuel? Assume constant acceleration.

Explanation / Answer

Part A)

V2= 2ah

h = 1700 m

V = 209m/sec

substituting values we get

a = 12.84m/sec^2

part B )

after the engine is shut down only force acting on rocket is gravity

therefore

a = 9.8 m/sec^2

Part C )

Hmax = 1700 + V2/2g

Hmax = 3928.62m

Hmax = 3.928km
