Explanation / Answer

Overdominance is a situation in which heterozygotes at a particular locus tend to have higher fitness than homozygotes. Causes alleles to exist in a stable equilibrium.

Dominance is a key concept in Mendelian inheritance. Dominance in genetics is a relationship between alleles of one gene, in which the effect on phenotype of one allele masks the contribution of a second allele at the same locus. Generally, where a gene exists in two allelic versions (designated A and a), three combinations of alleles are possible: AA, Aa, and aa. If AA and aa individuals (homozygotes) show different forms of some trait (phenotypes), and Aa individuals (heterozygotes) show the same phenotype as AA individuals, then allele A is said to dominate, be dominant to or show dominance to allele a, and a is said to be recessive to A.

In some instances, offspring can demonstrate a phenotype that is outside the range defined by both parents. In particular, the phenomenon known as overdominance occurs when a heterozygote has a more extreme phenotype than that of either of its parents. Overdominance sometimes confers a survival advantage in the heterozygote. A well-known example of overdominance occurs in the alleles that code for sickle-cell anemia.
