Question

my lab consists of collecting these following data: magnetic field, hall voltage and current. and i am having difficulty with the uncertainty. these are some of my data with uncertainties
B (G)+/- 3G B (T) I (mA)+/- 0.05mA I (A)+/-0.05E-3A V (mV)+/- 0.5mV V (V)+/-0.5E-3
2600 0.26 10.7 0.0107 42.9 0.0429
2500 0.25 10.6 0.0106 42.2 0.0422

questions:
1. i know that the conversion factor from gauss to tesla is 0.0001. so what happen to the +/-3G uncertainty. does it remain the same or get scaled as well?
2. from I i have to calculate J, current density, using J=I/A, where A is area. (10mm by 5mm). so how to find the uncertainty in J
3. from V i have to calculate E, electric field, using E=V/d, where d is the length (5mm). so how to find the uncertainty in E
4. lastly i have to find the ratio of E/J. how to find the uncertainty in this one

Explanation / Answer

For part 1: Just multiply the uncertainty by .0001. For parts 2 and 3: Calculate the propagation of error. It is explained pretty well here: http://www.itl.nist.gov/div898/handbook/mpc/section5/mpc55.htm For part 4: I am pretty sure you just divide the uncertainty of E by that of J.
