List the types of plastics (Give the plastic resin type number and example of trash items made of that plastic) in order of how easy they are to recycle. Which of these plastic types are actually recycled in your municipal area? How can you cause more of your local population to separate out their recyclables from their trash? Provide 3 different methods that would work in your area and provide evidence or reasons as to why those methods would work. Respond to four of your classmate's posts with a post that provides feedback on their essay Do not simply state "1 liked your paper or other such comments, Instead, focus on providing supporting evidence or reasoning as to why you agree with them. If you do not agree then provide supporting evidence or reasoning as to why you think that have presented supported the wrong viewpoint. Plastic can be recycled and made into new material to reduce the pollution caused by disposal of plastic on water, land and around the complete surroundings. There are mostly six categories of plastic which can be recycled.
PET (Polyethlene Terephthalate) – It is commonly used for production of water bottles and it is recyclable. The plastic is crushed, shredded into small flakes and spun into polyester fibres or recycled again into bottles.
HDPE (High density polyethylene) – It is stiff plastic and is one of the most commonly used recycled plastic. It does not break down on being exposed to sunlight or extreme temperature. It is reusable and recyclable.
PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) – It is soft, flexible type of plastic which is used for constructing cooking oil bottles and other products. It is not affected by the sunlight and weather and is also known as poison plastic as it contains number of toxins. It is rarely recycled and majorly disposed off.
LDPE (Low density polyethylene) – it is mostly used for creating grocery bags, squeezable bottles etc. and is not very toxic. It is usually not recycled due to its hard shape and consistency.
Polypropylene – It is a tough type of plastic but light weight and is resistant to heat. It pose a barrier against moisture and mostly used for making disposable thongs. It is recyclable to an extent and done through refurbishing process.
Polystyrene – It is an inexpensive type of plastic which is usually used for creating disposable products. It is extremely light weight and is not used for recycling as it leach styrene which is a carcinogen.
In the local the recyclable plastic can be separated from the non recyclable ones by spreading awareness about it. The separation can be done by teaching people on how to pack the plastics and keep it separately for municipal use. The local population can separate out the recyclables by hiring workers to separate it after giving them education about it.
Three methods that would work in the area are:-
1)Volunteering program – A clean up and organising a volunteer program will definitely help in collecting more people to do the job. It is a type of mass activity done for social welfare.
2) Educating workers – The daily wage labourers can be taught about how to go about the separation and how they can sell the recyclable plastic to get money.
3) Teaching students – Education is the strongest link and it all starts with school. It is important to teach the students about how to separate the plastic that is recyclable from others.
One of my classmate wrote an essay about how a volunteering program helped in organising a mass clean up of the environment as well as ensured that all waste plastic that were of recyclable nature were used for recycling. It is a good idea because volunteering programs tends to attract lot of people and also rightly solve the purpose.
