Question

A class of science students was assigned to design a step up transformer. The science laboratory uses outlets of 220 V AC. The instructor asked the class to design the transformers as efficiently as possible. She also gave the class a specific value for the output voltage. Two students submitted the following designs

1) Np = 5 loops, Ns = 20 loops.
2) Np = 5,000 loops, Ns = 20,000 loops

A) What is the output voltage for the first design?
What is the output voltage for the second design?

B) Which design is better and why?

Please show 1st and 2nd design work separately, and show all work for an A+.. Thanks

Explanation / Answer

Vs / Vp = Ns / Np ==> Vs = Vp Ns / Np = (220 V) (20) / (5) = (220 V) (20000) / (5000) = 880 V Design (1) (Np = 5 loops, Ns = 20 loops) is better because it uses less wire. Both designs have the same output voltage because they have the same ratio of loops.
