Question

PHYS 201 As.. 8. -11 points HRW10 15 P.058 A 9.50 kg block hangs from a spring. A 360 g body hung below the block stretches the spring 1.10 cm farther. (a) What is the spring constant? N/m (b) If the 360 9 body is removed and the block is set into oscillation, find the period of the motion. Additional Materials D Section 15.1 9.-11 points HRw10 15.P.072 A uniform circular disk whose radius R is 18.0 cm is suspended as a physical pendulum from a point on its rim. (a) What is its period of oscillation? (b) At what radial distance r s R is there a point of suspension that gives the same period? Additional Materials Section 15.1

Explanation / Answer

8.

We know that spring force is given by:

F = -kx

Also we know that F = m*g

Using force balance

m*g = k*dx

k = m*g/dx

k = 0.36*9.81/(1.1*10^-2)

k = 321.05 N/m

B.

Using the equation

w = sqrt (k/M) and

w = 2*pi/T

T = 2*pi*sqrt (M/k)

Using givne values:

T = 2*pi*sqrt (9.5/321.05)

T = 1.08 sec
