Explanation / Answer

(b)

As you know, magnetic field due to the current is given by:

B = uI/2pi*r

B1(due to 3A) = (4pi*10^-7)(3)/(2pi*0.28) [r is determined using Pythagorus theorem]

= 2.14 x 10^-6 T , 45 degrees above the -x axis

B2(due to 5A) = (4pi*10^-7)(5)/(2pi*0.20)

= 5 x 10^-6 T , along the negative x axis

Net field along x: Bx = - (B2 + B1cos45) = - 6.51 x 10^-6 T

Net field along y: By = B1sin45 = 1.51 x 10^-6 T

Thus the net field is:

E = sqrt(Bx^2 + By^2)

= 6.68 x 10-6 T
