Question 18 of 18 Map Sapling Learning macmilan learning Before Collision After Int iim It 2.40v = ? n,final-. Two particles approach each other with equal and opposite speed v. The mass of one particle is m, and the mass of the other particle is nm, where n is just a unitless number. Snapshots of the system before, during, and after the elastic collision are shown above. After the collision the first particle moves in the exact opposite direction with speed 2.40v, and the speed of the second particle is unknown. What is the value of n? Explanation / Answer

Using momentum conservation

Pi = Pf

m1*u1 + m2*u2 = m1*v1 + m2*v2

m1 = m

m2 = nm

u1 = v

u2 = -v

v1 = 2.40 v

v2 = ?

Using above values:

m*v - n*m*v = m*(-2.40v) + n*m*v2

3.4mv - n*m*v = n*m*v2

n*v2 = 3.4*v - n*v

Since given collison is elastic which means,

v2 - v1 = u1 - u2

v2 - (-2.4v) = v - (-v)

v2 = -0.4*v

Using this value:

n*(-0.4*v) = 3.4*v - n*v

0.6*n*v = 3.4*v

n = 3.4/0.6 = 5.67
