Question

Find the current in the circuit. The lightbulb in the circuit shown in the figure(Figure 1) has a resistance of 13 ? and consumes 8.0 W of power; the rod is 1.17 m long and moves to the left with a constant speed. The strength of the magnetic field is 1.5 T. Explanation / Answer

Part A

P = I2*R

I2 = P/R = 8/13 = 0.6154

I = 0.78446 amps (I = 0.78 amps in two sig figures)

Part B

e = I*R

e = 0.78446*13 = 10.198 volts

also,

e = B*dA/dt

e = B*L*v

v = e/BL

v = 10.198 / 1.5*1.17

v = 5.8108 m/s ( v = 5.8 m/s in two sig figures)
