12 13 15 18 20 SECTION II Free-Response Questions Time: 2 Questions 40 points Directions: Credit depends on the quality of your solutions and explanations 1. A 0.004 mol of ideal gas is taken through the cycle shown below, the temperature of state 1 is T -300K. a.Calculate T2 and T b.Calculate the amount of work done by the gas in one cycle. c.is the net work done on the gas in one complete cycle positive, negative or zero? Positive negative zero. P (x 103 Pa) 500t 300 K 100t 1 V (x 10-4 O 2.0 4.0 6.0

Explanation / Answer

(a)

From ideal gas eqation at point 1 and 2,

P1*V1 / T1 = P2*V2 / T2

here V1 = V2

so, T2 = T1*P2 / P1 = 300*500*10^3 / 100*10^3

T2 = 1500 K

From ideal gas eqation at point 1 and 3,

P1*V1 / T1 = P3*V3 / T3

Here P1 = P3

so, T3 = T1*V3 / V1 = 300*6*10-4 / 1*10-4

T3 = 1800 K

(b)

Work done by the gas in one cycle,

W = (1/2)*(P2 - P1)*(V1 - V3)

W = (1/2) * (500 - 100) * (1 - 6) * 103 * 10-4

W = -100 J

(c)

Work done by the gas in one cycle is negative.
