Halliday, Fundamentals of Physics, 10e | PRINTER VERSION | | BACK NEXT Chapter 09, Problem 050 A 4.90 g bullet moving at 733 m/s strikes a 550 g wooden block at rest on a frictionless surface. The bullet emerges, traveling in the same direction with its speed reduced to 462 m/s. (a) What is the resulting speed of the block? (b) What is the speed of the bullet-block center of mass? Here ,
a) let the speed of the block is v
Using conservation of motion
0.00490 * (733 - 462) = 0.550 * v
v = 2.414 m/s
the speed of the block is 2.414 m/s
b) as the speed of center of mass will not change
speed of center of mass = 4.9 * 733/(4.9 + 550)
speed of center of mass = 6.47 m/s
