Question

The three pictuted metabolic schemes are for three different organisms – Pseudomonas, Lactococcus and Mycoplasma. In each diagram, colored lines and nodes represent enzymes that are present in the organism, whereas grey lines and nodes represent enzymes that this organism doesn’t have. You should be able to orient yourself to the diagrams by locating the Acetyl-CoA and Pyruvate nodes on each diagram.

A. Briefly evaluate the metabolism of each organism. How do they make PMF, ATP and reducing power? Do they have a broad or a narrow metabolic capacity?

B. How would deleting the TCA cycle affect each organism? (Note: Don’t just think about the energy role of the TCA cycle)

Explanation / Answer

b) Kreb's cycle, a cellular respiratory pathway releases energy. Kreb's cycle intemediates controls GacA dependent virulence factors in P. aeroginosa and also triggers secondary metabolism via GacA dependent small RNAs. If the kreb's cycle is impaired then micororganism will be unable to produce energy via oxidation of food and therebyits pathogenecity will also be reduced
