Question

PLEASE, explain in steps how to determine the directions of the APPLIED magnetic field for part (a) and the induced current in the circular loop for part (b).

a) Figure below shows a circuit in which a conducting bar is slid with a speed v downward through a uniform magnetic field and along a U-shaped wire. The current induced in circuit is clockwise. What is the direction of the applied magnetic field? Conducting Bar -? U-shaped- wire ?0.5m? b) Draw the direction of the induced current in the circular loop wire due to the current in the straight wire shown in figure? (They both are on the plane of the page) I increasing

Explanation / Answer

a. The direction of the applied magnetic field is upwards i.e., out of the page.

The induced current is clockwise and the direction of the magentic field due to this induced current is downwards (into the page). According to Lenz's law the induced current should be in a direction so that it opposes the change in flux.

b. The direction of the magnetic field is into page due to the current. So the induced current will be in a direction to oppose the change in flux. So the induced current must be anticlockwise in the circular loop.
