Explanation / Answer

a)

m1 = 3.2 kg

r1 = distance of m1 from X-axis = 2 m

m4 = 3.7 kg

r4 = distance of m4 from X-axis = 2 m

Moment of inertia about X-axis is given as

Ix = m1 r12 + m4 r42

Ix = (3.2) (2)2 + (3.7) (2)2

Ix = 27.6 kgm2

b)

m3 = 3.2 kg

r3 = distance of m1 from X-axis = 2 m

m4 = 3.7 kg

r4 = distance of m4 from X-axis = 2 m

Moment of inertia about X-axis is given as

Iy = m3 r32 + m4 r42

Iy = (3.2) (2)2 + (3.7) (2)2

Iy = 27.6 kgm2
