Question
RC Circuit Analysis (a) When the switch is open, what is the current through the 1082 resistor? (b) When the switch is open, what is the voltage across the capacitor? (c) Immediately after the switch is closed, what is the voltage across the capacitor? (d) Immediately after the switch is closed, what is the charge on the capacitor? (e) After the switch is closed, does the current through the resistor increase, decrease or stay the same? (f) After the switch has been closed a very long time, what is the current through the 10? resistor? (g) After the switch has been closed a very long time, what is the voltage across the capacitor? 60? 10? 100V 40?Explanation / Answer
a) when switch is open current will not flow (because it is a open circuit)
b) voltage across the capacitor is also zero. (open circuit)
c) Immedietly after the switch is closed:
Capacitor initially uncharged, therefore voltage across the capacitor VC =0 (since V=Q/C). Therefore Capacitor behaves as a wire (short circuit).
d) Q = 0 on the capacitor.
e) Current falls exponentially as time increases.
f) After a very long time capacitor will fully charged therefore the flow of current will stopped through 10 ohm resistor.
g) After a very long time votage across the capacitor will be equal to the source voltage (i.e. 100 Volts).
