RC Circuit PhysicsI Lab-08 PHY161 Questions 1. Compare the experimental time constants measured in the charging and discharging processes. Which value is greater and why is it greater? Juime 2. Does the time constant depend on the voltage delivered by the battery? The tuime cugso ne T RC 3. Based on the parameters of the experiment determine the maximum charge accumulated on the capacitor. THimbr dange 4. Based on the parameters of the experiment determine the maximum current f through the resistor. 298 ()- 217V I 300 A 5. For this experiment, show a simple way of measuring the resistance of the multimeter

Explanation / Answer

construct a simple RC circuit with two switches

let the capacitor become fully charged, we have R as resistance of the multimeter and R1 is the resistance used in the RC circuit.

Measure teh voltage across teh capacitor and plot it against time.

From the curve, the time at which the value of voltage has dropped to 0.3678 of the original value becomes one time constant.

If the resistance of the multimeter is R1 then time constant should be R+R1/C

As we know R and C already, from equating it to the value of one time constant we can easily find the value of unknown resistance of the multimeter.
