NAME: KEY GUIDELINES: a) Your score will partly depend on the presentation of your work: Write your solution as though you are explaining things to someone who knows nothing about the problem. b) If you quote an equation or definition, briefly describe what it is and why it is relevant or derive it from eore principles Concepts Spring 2018 PHY 111/113 Topic 3: Energy T3.1] What is the significance of a minimum of the potential energy function for an interaction? IT3.2] Why is an increase in thermal energy associated with irreversibility?

Explanation / Answer

3.1 Minium Potentional Energy show the state of stability it means that system is in equalibirium. Minium Potentional Energy shows that (at low temperatures) a structure or body shall deform or displace to a position that (locally) minimizes the total potential energy, with the lost potential energy being converted into kinetic energy (specifically heat).

3.2 Increase in thermal Energy(or Heat transfer) change the entrophy of system. In the reversible process entrophy remains same and in irreversable entrophy changes.

                     ?S = Q / T

Hence in increases in thermal energy gives irreversibility.
