Question
The figure below shows a long straight wire just touching a circular loop carrying a current I1-2.82 A in the counterclockwise direction Both lie in the same plane. (a) What direction must the current 12 in the straight wire have in order to create a magnetic field at the center of the loop in the direction opposite to that created by the loop? O from right to left O from left to right (b) What current must the long straight wire carry in order to have zero net magnetic field strength at the center of the loop?Explanation / Answer
a) for the loop , the magnetic field produced is out of the page
hence , due to wire , the magnetic field must be into the page
using right hand rule , the current in wire must be from right to left
b) Now, let the current is I
for the field at center to be zero
u0 * I/(2pi * d) = u0 * I1/(2 * d)
I = pi * I1
I = 2.82 * 3.14 = 8.85 A
the current needed in the wire is 8.85 A
