When an electromagnetic wave falls on the edge of an obstacle which is comparable to the wavelength of the electromagnetic wave,the em wave deviates from its original path and if we place a screen at the back side of the obstacle we can see fringes.This phenomena is diffraction.Now according to Huygen's principle every point on the edge of the obstacle acts as a secondary source.Since these secondary source generates from one single wave they are monochromatic taking into account that the source is monochromatic and the wave from seceodary souce produces interference pattern on the screen.
