ose an experiment and suggest a control treat ollowing questions. or each of the Do bearded dragons that are genetically male change into females It eggs are incubated at temperatures above 32°C Control: b. Is the cause of colic in newborns related to the microbial community in their intestines? Experiment: Control: c. Female waterbugs lay their eggs on the backs of male waterbugs who care for the eggs. Do female waterbugs prefer to mate with male water bugs with large numbers of eggs? Experiment: Control: A recent study of $9,806 Caucasian women reports that women who take aspirin for five or more years are 30% less likely to develop melanoma than women who do not use aspirin. List other variables that would be impor tant to control in this study (controlled variables) 5. 6. A study of the effects of vitamin D in the body has shown that persons with lower levels of vitamin D are more likely to have chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, colds, and flu. Can you conclude

Explanation / Answer

4a) Experiment: Bearded dragons are cold-blooded animals that regulate body temperature from external sources such as sun.

Bearded dragon eggs with ZZ chromosomes (genetically male) are incubated at different temperatures (320C, 350C. 370C, 400C, 430C, 500C, 550C, 600C). The eggs are allowed to grow at these temperatures and hatched. If the male have turned to transgender females, the sex of the bearded dragon is still male. However, the dragons will have female reproductive organs but behave as a male, such as oldness, activity level, and exploratory behavior. These females will be aggressive, bold and more assertive than normal females.

Control: Male Eggs that were kept at 320C and less can be one control. Another control will be genetically female eggs kept at this different temperature.

b) Stool samples of age matched Newborn babies with or without colic is collected, diluted and cultured on media specific for lactobacilli, clostridia, gram-negative anaerobes and Enterobacteriaceae. Lactobacilli species should be less frequently colonized in colicky newborns as these species are required for efficient digestion. clostridia, gram-negative anaerobes and Enterobacteriaceae should be more in newborns with colic as they are pathogens involved in causing diarrhea.

Controls : Age matched newborns with no colic.

c) Males (n=10) are placed in a breeding aquarium together with females (n=10). Egg deposition occurred on back of males for up to 24h. Males with more than 10 eggs are picked and manipulated for number of eggs. There are two groups of males: Caring males with 10 eggs and non-caring males with no eggs. The parental intent of males is not affected by removal of eggs. The males were mated with females and courtship behavior was examined. Presence of 10 eggs allowed the males to receive more eggs as it is known that fully loaded males reject female spawning.

A caring male, non-caring male and a female with mature eggs was placed together. A second group will be caring male with large number of egg (fully loaded) mated with a female with mature eggs. Number of eggs laid on back of males is counted after one and half hrs. If the female only laid eggs on the caring male with large number of eggs, then it indicates number of egg in the male back influences the laying of eggs by females in second mating. Control: The control is a caring male with 10 egg mated with a female with mature eggs. This male should show laying of eggs.
