Question
Find the magnitude of the electric field at a point midway between two charges +16.8 x 10^-9 C and +59.7 x 10^-9 C seperated by a distance of 34.1 cm(.341m). The value of the Coulomb constant is 8.99 x 10^9 N x m^2 / C^2. Answer in units of N/C.
I'm not sure how to approach this problem, but I was thinking of F= k q1 q 2 / r^2 = F = (8.99 x 10^9)(16.8 x 10^-9)(59.7 x 10^-9) / (.341m)^2 = 7.754 x 10 ^ -5 N/C. If someone could solve this within 20 minutes that would be great cause my problem set is due at 11:00 p.m. Thanks.
Explanation / Answer
both are positive charges electric field due to both charges at mid point are in opposite direction,we have to take the difference midway means r = .341/2 = .1705 m E1 = kq1/r^2 = 5195 .4146 N/C E2 = kq2/r^2 = 18462.27673 N/C Total electric field = E2-E1 = 13266.86 N/C
